All About Confirmation at American Church in Berlin

Confirmation—also called affirmation of baptism—is the moment when a baptized person publicly claims the promises God first made to them in the waters of baptism. It is a joyful, grace-soaked step into mature Christian life, trusting that the Holy Spirit has already been at work long before the words are spoken. In this rite, the church surrounds the confirmand in prayer and blessing, celebrating God’s faithful love and the young person’s “yes” to a life of discipleship.

Affirmation of Baptism is a moment when a person publicly claims the promises God first made to them in the waters of baptism. In the American Protestant traditions, this step is usually taken around the age of sixteen, after a period of preparation that helps young people explore the foundations of Christian faith, worship, and daily discipleship. Youth are strongly encouraged to participate in confirmation classes as a normal and important part of their faith formation, not as a graduation from church life, but as a deeper step into it.

For adults, the invitation is just as open and just as meaningful. Many adults seek a formal affirmation of baptism when they join a congregation, experience a renewal of faith, or simply feel ready to make a public commitment to the promises God has already spoken over their lives. Unlike baptism—which happens once—affirmation of baptism can be practiced at several significant moments throughout a person’s life, marking fresh beginnings in faith.

At American Church in Berlin, adults who desire baptism or affirmation of baptism are welcomed into an eight-week intensive faith course with the pastor and others on a similar journey. This course creates a warm, thoughtful space to ask questions, explore Scripture, and grow together in trust, as each person prepares to stand before the community and joyfully affirm God’s grace.
